Agrinergy Pte Limited

Agrinergy is a pioneer in the carbon market and a leading provider of carbon credit services, with a focus on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Agrinergy provides companies in industrialising countries with an end-to end solution - from identifying and registering climate change projects through to marketing the resulting carbon credits and obtaining related project finance. We have not only registered projects but also developed methodologies (which form the basis of any CDM project) for certain sectors, which highlights our understanding of the key CDM concepts. The ability to apply these in the context of individual projects is demonstrated through Agrinergy's activities in project development.

CDM Project(s)

Activity 1
ACC Blended Cement projects
Agrinergy has partnered ACC, one of the largest cement manufacturers in India; to create a project which utilizes CDM to overcome the barriers in increasing the blend of flyash at its plants. The current average percentage blend of fly-ash in the brand is 19.5%, and the project activity will enable ACC to increase this to 30% and above. The cement plants undertaking the CDM project activities range in capacity from 0.6 million tonnes to 2.6 million tonnes. The project contributes to sustainable development in a number of ways. A key impact of the project activity is environmental - limestone is a finite resource, and the (open cast) mining of limestone can have adverse environmental effects. Fly ash is a by-product of electricity generation, and is a product for which disposal can be difficult. Replacing limestone-derived clinker with fly ash therefore provides two benefits. Moreover, clinker production is highly energy intensive. Reducing clinker production will therefore conserve energy and given the power shortages that are prevalent in many parts of India, will assist India's overall development process. Finally, the project will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Agrinergy has been instrumental to these projects, having developed a new methodology and has also prepared the PDD, attended validation and assisted in obtaining Host Country Approval. The project has been registered and Agrinergy is assisting ACC in verification of the carbon credits.

Activity 2
JCT Hoshiarpur Small Scale Biomass Project
Agrinergy has partnered JCT Ltd, a leading Indian textile and nylon manufacturer in the creation of a CDM project for biomass based cogeneration. The project activity consists of the installation of a 6MW extracting cum condensing turbine generator and a 64 bar boiler with a capacity of 38 tonnes per hour at the Hoshiarpur filament yarn plant owned by JCT Ltd. The installation of the new equipment will allow the factory to deliver GHG emission neutral electricity to the Punjab grid. The project utilizes CDM revenue to overcome barriers to biomass based cogeneration such as the costs involved in the installation of newer, advanced technologies, the risks associated with availability of biomass and institutional risks. Agrinergy has been instrumental in the CDM development of this project, having prepared the PDD, attended validation and stakeholder consultations as well as providing assistance in obtaining DNA approval. The project has been registered and Agrinergy is managing the verification of the carbon credits.

Activity 3
RSCL grid based bagasse co-generation expansion project
Agrinergy has partnered RSCL, a Coimbatore-based sugar company in the creation of a CDM project for grid based bagasse cogeneration. The project activity involves the installation of a high pressure boiler and a 22MW turbine generator at RSCL Unit 2 in Tamil Nadu. The installation of the new equipment will allow the factory to deliver GHG emission neutral electricity to the Tamil Nadu grid. The project utilizes CDM revenue to overcome barriers to grid based bagasse cogeneration such as the costs involved in the installation of newer, advanced technologies and the risks associated with availability of bagasse. The project contributes to sustainable development in a number of ways. A key impact of the project activity is economic - the sugar factory employs 485 people and serves over 20,000 farmers from 655 villages, as well as 60 agricultural graduates. RSCL provides technological and financial assistance to the farmers, as well as supply of inputs. The factory has also established healthcare and educational facilities for the local community. Thus, the factory leads to the development of the economy as a whole and the maintenance of livelihoods. Agrinergy has been instrumental in the CDM development of this project, having prepared the PDD, attended validation and stakeholder consultations. The project has been registered and Agrinergy has guided RSCL in the verification of the carbon credits.
