Activity 1
TOACHI - PILATON HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT 253 MW
Toachi-Pilaton is a hydroelectric project located in Ecuador, Province of Pichincha, 80 km from Quito (capital of Ecuador). The project will have an installed capacity of 253 MW according final design and will produce an estimated annual generation of 1.090 GWh. This project consists of two powerhouses: SARAPULLO and ALLURIQUIN. The first one consists of a water intake structure located in Pilatón river. This structure will have a height of 20 m. The water flow is led through a tunnel, 6,0 km long, to reach three turbines in SARAPULLO, with an installed capacity of 49 MW. The next structure consists in a dam located in Toachi River. The crown of this dam will have a maximum height of 60 m and will be approximately 140 m wide. The flow of the reservoir and discharge of SARAPULLO is led through a new tunnel, with 9,0 km to reach another 3 turbines, located at ALLURIQUIN powerhouse, with an installed capacity of 204 MW. The energy of these powerhouses will be added to the National GRID, through a direct interconnection with the existing 230 KV line, that connects Quito and Santo Domingo de Los Colorados city. There will be a Substation located in Alluriquín, near the powerhouse, to connect to the GRID. Additionally, due to its location on the Pacific slope, the project will provide an important stability to the electrical system from the technical and economic viewpoints, since the largest hydroelectric power stations in the country are located on the eastern slope. It is important to emphasize that these slopes display different yearly hydrological regimes, which become complementary from the viewpoint of electrical supply.
